Artist Brief Biography
    Robert Ottakar Lindneux.
Born: December 11, 1871, New York, New York
Died: November 24, 1970, Denver, Colorado

Robert Ottakar Lindneux was born in New York City December 11, 1871.  Very early in life he showed
an interest in art and when he had learned from all the private tutors that could teach him in America
(including Charles M. Russell).  He traveled to Europe to study.  During the Spanish-American war he
decided to return to America to enlist as a soldier, when he arrived in New York, he was informed that
the war was over.  Lindneux had been interested in Western subjects since 1889, when he had met
Buffalo Bill in Paris.  Once in America he worked his way Westward, first to Denver Colorado and then
he moved to Montana to get his fist job as a ranch hand. For the next 10-15 years he was a working
cowboy, a hunter, a guide and during all, an Artist.  On occasions he lived with the Indians and was
made an honorary chief. From the Cheyenne, the Crow and the Ogalla Sioux he learned the Indian way
of life which had changed and would never be the same.

The early days after the turn of the century, was the era of the horse in the West, in some remote
areas the stagecoach lines were still running. Lindneux recorded these changes in his canvases.
When he painted a particular scene which had Historical significance and truth he went to the scene,
he studied the land and its vegetation, he interviewed the people who were there, and he obtained the
costumes and equipment correct for the particular scene.
Lindneux painted many Historical  paintings among them being; "The Beacher Island Battle," "The
Sand Creek Massacre," and "Buffalo Bills Defeat of Yellow Hair," One of his most widely celebrated
paintings is the equestrian portrait of his friend William F. "Buffalo Bill Cody, done in 1921-22, and now
hanging in Cody Memorial museum located at Lookout Mountain, near Denver Colorado.  Other well
known paintings of Lindneux include; Gen. John J Pershing,  "Opening of Oklahoma Territory, 1889.”
    Trail of Tears". "Chisholm Trail."

Robert Lindneux’s works hang in most major Western Art Galleries across the country as well as in
private collections. The largest collections are in the Colorado Historical Museum, the Buffalo Bill
Museum at Cody Wyoming, the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, and Ben E. Bond of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The
latter owned perhaps the largest outstanding collection of original paintings of Lindneux, this
collection was recently auctioned off by a Major Auction Company, and has established record sales
of Lindneuxs work.  Ben E. Bond is also the printer of these Robert Lindneux prints and the B. E. Bond
name appears on each print.  Lindneux had a long career as an artist. His love of his work kept him
young. As with many artists he was disappointed by his lack of proper recognition during his own
lifetime. Yet he exhibited in Paris, London, Berlin, Vienna, Munich, Budapest, and most major cities of
his own native country. In 1959 in Denver Colorado he gave what he said was his last exhibit. When
asked how he could give up his painting, his reply was amusing but indicative of his practical nature.
He said “I have always used the finest of imported canvas. I bought it by the roll. I have now used up
my entire supply and since it is very hard to get, I figure I will simply stop painting."  Lindneux lived
quietly with his family in his mountain home in Evergreen Colorado, which, by the way contained a
    very large studio!
